Summer Reading 2019

The New Carlisle Public Library invites you to explore A Universe of Stories through fun space-related books and interactive STEAM activities.  Children, teens and adults of all ages, from birth through age 120, are invited to participate.  All programs are free, but some programs require pre-registration. Sign-up for our special programs begins on May 20, 2019; sign-up for the reading incentive and reward program begins June 1st and continues through June and July!

Boonshoft Star Lab at Park Layne Elementary School
This program requires pre-registration.  Sign-up beings on May 20, 2019.
Monday, June 3, 11:00 a.m. and Noon
Explore the wonders of the night sky!  Topics that may be covered include Earth's rotation and orbit around the Sun, Moon phases, currently visible planets, and constellations.

Who Are You Calling Weird? 
This program requires pre-registration.  Sign-up begins on May 20, 2019.  

Wednesday, June 5, 1:00 PM
The weirder the creature, the more amazing they are! Discover some of the weirdest and most amazing creatures in the world. Participate in an activity and make something to take home.  Program presented by a naturalist from the Clark County Park District.

Indoor Competitive Worm Racing (Please bring a worm)
Friday, June 7, 11:00 a.m.
New Carlisle's premier racing event!  Find a worm, give him a name, and test him for speed on the library's special race track.  Please bring a worm with you to the track.

TEENS:  Tea Time Drawing
Friday, June 7, 4:30 p.m.
Bring your own art supplies or use ours.  We will provide the tea!  We will all work on our own projects, and Sarah from New Carlisle Toys & Games will discuss her art and artistic methods.

Try It:  Art Class with Ms. Nancy (CLASS IS FULL)
This program requires pre-registration and is limited to 11 students, ages 7 & up.  Sign-up begins on May 20, 2019.
Tuesday, June 11, 1:00 p.m.  This class has been cancelled and rescheduled for Tuesday, June 25, 1:00 p.m.
Always one of our most popular programs!  Retired Tecumseh Art Teacher, Ms. Nancy Dyer, draws students into a relationship with art.  

Librarian Tillie & the Stillwater Stargazers present:
Telescope for Beginners
Tuesday, June 11, 7:30-8:30 p.m.
The Stillwater Stargazers Astronomy Club will host an opportunity to learn how to utilize all of the functions available on the telescope that the library has available for loan as well as enjoy a night sky viewing experience. This program is for all ages; children should be accompanied by an adult.

Wednesday, June 12, 1:30 p.m.
Explore the universe of ballet!  Have you always wanted to learn to dance like your favorite characters Angelina Ballerina or Fancy Nancy?  Well come try an intro to ballet class with Miss Amy!  We will plié, jeté, and pirouette.
Feel free to wear your most fancy dress or skirt.  Ages 3-18.   

TEENS:  Cosmic Cookie Decorating 
Thursday, June 13, 4:00 p.m.
This program requires pre-registration.  Sign-up begins on May 20, 2019.  ​
Explore the cookie galaxy with frosting and sprinkles!  Fun for grades 5-12.

Mike Hemmelgarn
Friday, June 14, 11:00 a.m.
All of Mike's shows are a whirlwind of comedy juggling and ventriloquism with a splash of magic and lots of audience participation.  He offers wildly entertaining stage shows that emphasize the importance of reading. Fun for all ages!  His puppets are unique and engaging.

The Turtle Lady (Sponsored by the New Carlisle Rotary Club)
Friday, June 21, 1:00 p.m.
Laugh and learn with the Turtle Lady (Nancy Lockard) as she shares her passion for turtles. Participants will get plenty of touching time with more than 20 turtles, some bearded dragons, corn snakes and an amphibian or two. Always one of our most popular programs.  Our thanks to the New Carlisle Rotary Club for sponsoring this program!

The Hero Kid
Friday, June 21, 4:30-5:30 p.m.
This program requires pre-registration.  Sign-up begins on May 20, 2019.
We are pleased to announce a new partnership with Craig, Rachel, and Sarah at New Carlisle Toys & Games!  We are inviting eight kids, ages 7-10, to meet at the New Carlisle Public Library to play THE HERO KID, a fantasy role-playing game.  Sarah from New Carlisle Toys & Games will guide kids through a role-playing game scenario designed just for young children.  Kids will learn that heroes come in all shapes and sizes, including warriors, hunters, healers, knights, and more!

TEENS:  Space Slime
Thursday, June 27, 4:00 p.m.
This program requires pre-registration.  Sign-up begins on May 20, 2019.  
Make slime only an alien would love!  Fun for grades 5-12.

Erica Carlson’s Let’s Have a Blast Magic Show
Friday, June 28, 1:00 p.m.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1 … get ready for some fun! We have to find Sedgie the Hedgie before he blasts off into outer space! This show is full of unexpected and silly surprises and is a good mix of comedy and magic that is sure to leave your little ones giggling the whole time. Is Sedgie going to blast off into space or stick around for the fun? You better watch to find out!

Tuesday, July 9, 7:00 p.m.
Kids ages 6-9 and their parents are invited to listen to the story Zoo in the Sky and work on a "family constellation" together.  If the weather allows, we may be able to take a look through a telescope.  Program presented by Mr. Joe Dekold, member of the Stillwater Stargazers, and coordinated by Librarian Tillie.

Radical Rocket Science with Crystal Clear Science (Sponsored by the Friends of the New Carlisle Public Library)
Friday, July 12, 1:00 p.m.
This summer blasts off with hands-on, minds-on presentations of the physics behind rockets with Crystal Clear Science. Find out why, in space, no one can hear you scream. Learn fun experiments you can do at home. This program is geared toward kids in grades K-12.  Our thanks to the Friends of the New Carlisle Public Library for sponsoring this program!

Nature in Motion at George Rogers Clark Park
This program requires pre-registration.  Sign-up begins on May 20, 2019.  
Wednesday, July 17, 1:00 p.m.
Meet at George Rogers Clark Park, in front of the Hertzler House; 930 S. Tecumseh Rd., Springfield, OH  45506
Program presented by Andy Grimm, Photographer, and Donna Lewis, Naturalist.
Parent and child teams will walk around the park together taking pictures, accompanied by a professional photographer and a naturalist.  We'll talk about the plants and animals we're seeing, photographic techniques, and compare our photographs.  You may email the photographs you take to dlewis@clarkcountyparks.org for display on the social media feeds for the New Carlisle Public Library and the Clark County Park District.  Discover a Universe of Stories at your local parks!  Bring your camera or cell phone. 

TEENS:  Space Bingo
Thursday, July 18, 4:00 p.m.
This program requires pre-registration.  Sign-up begins on May 20, 2019.  
In outer space, no one can hear you scream BINGO, but here at the library we sure can! 
Teens in grades 5-12 will play Bingo for prizes that include teen books and other surprises.  Snacks!

StarGaze at the Clark County Park District
Program requires pre-registration and completion of the Summer Reading Program.

Friday, August 2 
Children and teens who fill out a registration form for the Summer Reading Club and complete at least one star card are invited to attend a special StarGaze Party! 
Activities begin at 7:00 p.m. with the stargaze beginning at 9:00 p.m.

Summer Storytime Dates
Storytime begins the week of June 1, and continue through June and July of 2019.  We look forward to seeing you and your family!

Shake, Rattle & Roll begins Tuesday, June 4, 2019
Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.
Children ages 0-3, and an actively participating caregiver, will enjoy stories, songs, dancing, shaky eggs, fingerplays, felt boards, musical instruments, and a simple art activity.  Siblings, grandparents, and friends are always welcome.

Music & Movement begins Wednesday, June 5, 2019
Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m.
Enjoy stories, songs, movement & dancing, scarves, felt boards, fingerplays, musical instruments, a simple art activity, and, sometimes, parachute play.  Best for children ages 3-8, but all are welcome!
